  • The Shalheveth Freier Center for Peace, Science & Technology

The Center was established in 1996, and was dedicated to the memory of Shalheveth Freier, a pillar of the IAEC for a period of nearly 40 years. Shalheveth Freier laid the foundation of a policy concept in the field of nuclear energy, based on Israel's needs.

Shalheveth Freier served as a scientific adviser at the Israeli Embassy in Paris, as the director of the Soreq Nuclear Research Center and as the Director-General of the IAEC between 1971 and 1976. From 1981 he served as the head of the IAEC's policy team, a post he held until his death. Shalheveth Freier acted as the IAEC's representative in many forums, both formally and informally.

The Shalheveth Freier Center for Peace, Science & Technology is located at the SNRC, and its purpose is to broaden the scientific activity intended to promote peace in the Middle East. An example of this activity is the establishment of a National Data Center (NDC), which is a part of Israel's participation in the monitoring mechanism of the CTBT, and which could be a basis of future regional security arrangements. The Center also organizes seminars, such as the 1996 seminar on Nuclear Medicine and a Seismic Analysis international workshop which took place in 1998.

Another aspect of the Center's activity is the study of how policy aspects and technological aspects intertwine in the nuclear field. An example of this is a seminar, organized with the Institute for Science and International Security (ISIS), about the improvement of the relations between Argentina and Brazil.

Further details on the seminar can be found on the ISIS website:
