  • Israel and the IAEA Discuss Technical Cooperation
On June 26-30, 2005 IAEA delegation visited Israel and held discussions on areas of technical cooperation with Israel. The visit took place as a part of a process to develop a Country Program Framework for technical cooperation. The purpose of the visit was to discuss the document and explore future directions for technical cooperation between Israel and the Agency in peaceful applications of nuclear technologies in the domains of health, agriculture, environment, sciences and engineering.

The delegation was hosted by the Israel Atomic Energy Commission at the Soreq Nuclear Research Center, and met with the representatives of the Ministries of Health, Agriculture, Environment, Energy and National Infrastructures and Foreign Affairs as well as with Ben Gurion University. The delegation also visited at the Ministries of Health and Agriculture and focused on technical cooperation in these areas.

In the framework of technical cooperation with the Agency Israel has implemented 29 national projects utilizing nuclear and radioactive technologies in the areas of agriculture, health, safety, science and engineering. Currently there are 2 national projects underway:
  • Health project aimed at facilitating the upgrade of the national dosimetry service for radiotherapy audits. This project aims at fostering the national quality assurance capabilities in the area of radiotherapy dosimetry to increase the accuracy of the dose delivery to patients undertaking radiotherapy treatment in Israel.
  • Agricultural project aimed at promoting the application of the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) to strengthening the capacity for the area-wide control of the Mediterranean Fruit Fly. This project builds upon a competed project and it aims at expanding the area-wide suppression of the Mediterranean fruit fly and allowing production and exports of low pesticide commodities.
During the recent visit Israel and the IAEA have agreed to continue their cooperation, focusing on the areas of health, scientific applications and agriculture.
