  • Training Jordanian on SIT to control the Mediterranean fruit fly
As part of a regional IAEA Technical Cooperation (TC) project, a Jordanian delegation visited Israel. The delegation included 2 members from the Jordanian Ministry of Agriculture as well as 6 leading farmers.

The purpose of the visit was to receive training in SIT- Sterile Insect Technique that is used to control the Mediterranean fruit fly and to encourage cooperation between Jordanian and Israeli farmers. The visit was organized by the Plant Protection and Inspection Services at the Ministry of Agriculture, sponsored by the International Atomic Energy Agency and coordinated by the Israel Atomic Energy Commission.

The delegation visited the southern project ("Arava"), where the SIT has already been used, and the planned Northern project. Furthermore, the delegation toured agricultural fields with various crop and visited the sterile insect factory (Bio-Fly) at Kibutz Sde Eliyahu. The delegation received reports from various professionals, including from the Ministry of Agriculture.

The visit is an outcome of the productive cooperation between the Technical Cooperation Division at the International Atomic Energy Agency, Israeli government authorities (the Israel Atomic Energy Commission and the Ministry of Agriculture) and the Jordanian government.
