  • The International Atomic Energy Agency Approves Technical Cooperation with Israel on 5 Projects

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors has approved, on November 23, 2006, Technical Cooperation by the IAEA with Israel on five projects for 2007-2008. These projects are included in the framework of the IAEA Technical Cooperation programme for these years, together with projects of many other states.

Israel participates in the Technical Cooperation programme of the IAEA since 1976. More than 30 projects in the areas of health, agriculture, environment and science benefited so far from this cooperation. On September 2006, the IAEA and the Israel Atomic Energy Commission (IAEC) Israel have signed a bilateral agreement on Country Program Framework (CPF) which details the common objectives and plans of the two sides in nuclear development for peaceful purposes.

The approval of the scope diversity projects attests to the bilateral cooperation between the IAEA and the IAEC. It also demonstrates the interest of Israel in developing nuclear applications for public welfare purposes, in close cooperation between the IAEC and other Israeli ministries and agencies.

The IAEA approved projects are as follows-

  • Upgrading the national Secondary Standards Dosimetry Laboratory (SSDL) - A new project conducted by the Israeli Ministry of Health to improve accuracy and consistency in radiation dosimetry through the upgrading of calibration and verification services provided by the existing national SSDL.
  • Strengthening the capacity for the area-wide control of the Mediterranean fruit fly using the Sterile Insect Technique - A follow up project conducted by the Plant Protection and Inspection Services at the Israeli Ministry of Agriculture, aimed at expanding the area-wide suppression of the Mediterranean fruit fly supporting the further promoting of national Sterile Insect Technique (SIT).
  • Feasibility study to assess the integration of the Sterile Insect Technique into olive fly suppression programs - A new project conducted by the Plant Protection and Inspection Services at the Israeli Ministry of Agriculture aimed at assessing on a pilot scale the potential of integrating the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) as part of an area wide integrated olive fruit fly management.
  • Establishment of a university undergraduate program on medical and radiation physics - A new project conducted by the Ben-Gurion University to support the establishment of an academic center for education and certification of medical and radiation physics professionals.
  • Human Resources development and nuclear technology support - will be conducted by the IAEA in cooperation with the IAEC.
Under the framework of the IAEA Technical Cooperation Department, Israel belongs to the region of Asia and the Pacific and participates in the various IAEA Technical Cooperation activities both regionally and internationally. Israel’s participation includes assistance to developing countries in the region and elsewhere in promoting nuclear technologies for human welfare.
