- Convention on Assistance in the Case of Nuclear Accident or Radiological
Emergency

The treaty was signed on September 1986,
following the Chernobyl accident, and entered into force on February 1987.
The treaty established an international network of cooperation to provide assistance
in case of a nuclear malfunction or radiological emergency.
State parties are required to notify the IAEA regarding experts, equipment and materials
in their possession, available to provide assistance when needed. Upon receipt of
a request for assistance, a state party may decide on the scope and terms of the
assistance it is prepared to grant. The IAEA is the point of contact for routing
the support and assistance efforts.
Treaty status: 86 states are party to the treaty, 68 have signed it.
Israel ratified the treaty on May 25th, 1989.
Middle Eastern states party to the treaty are Egypt, Jordan, Iraq, Iran, Saudi Arabia
and Morocco. Syria has not signed the treaty.
